Talking was the last thing on Nathan’s mind. She looked so hot in that purple dress, he itched to slide the zip all the way to the hem. But she’d never be that much of a pushover.

Half expecting her to leave anyway, he uncorked another bottle of red and poured out two fresh glasses. Donna’s warning about it being too soon kept gnawing away at him. But how much time was enough?

Crossing her sleek legs at the ankle, she swirled the wine around the bowl of her glass. Gulping his like a nervous teen, he splashed a red trail down his shirt. He dabbed at the stain with a square of kitchen roll while he weighed up his next move.

“If you don’t like John, why did you bother inviting him?” she asked.

“You know what they say. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Who the fuck does he think he is? A biker convention in Havenwood? I’ve got Katie’s security to consider.”

“Oh, for goodness sake! You can’t mean kidnapping? If you’re that loaded, you wouldn’t have ended up in a quaint old cottage in the back of beyond.”

The image was a punch in the gut. The fear of losing Katie would haunt him forever. Worse since Olivia showed up, lugging her dubious connections to Lucas Jax.

“I won’t stand for all and sundry staying next door.”

“Get over yourself!” she scoffed, sticking the knife in further. “Is this what you wanted to talk about? You can’t dictate what I do with my property. It’ll be up to the rental agency. You can’t wait to be rid of me or you’d have told me there might be a job at the hall.”

“You’ve been so full of London, how would I know you’d consider anywhere local?”

“I need a job. Of course I’d consider it.”

He stamped on the surge of hope. She was a long way from falling into his arms.

“I hope you get what you want.”

He raised his glass in a toast. Their eyes locked. There was a hint of a thaw in her smile as she took a sip. But she put down the glass.

“I’d better go. Presentation to prepare before Monday.”

“I want you to stay.” Did he mean tonight or forever? Even he wasn’t sure.

“I’m done, Nathan. I don’t drink much these days. My head’s already spinning.”

“Have coffee?” He risked taking her hand. “A dance?”

“One minute we’re arguing, the next you’re asking me to dance?”

“We weren’t arguing. We were debating.”

“Typical man. Can’t admit you’re losing.”

“Typical woman. Has to have the last word.”

Bemused, she let him lead her across the room. Her hand was warm. He wanted to grasp it tighter in case she changed her mind. Despite the two sofas flanking a huge checked rug, there was plenty of space for dancing. He prayed he’d remember some steps.

He turned off the sound system and opened the inlaid lid of an antique wind-up gramophone. “Impulse auction purchase. It can be temperamental but I think you’ll like it.”

He unfolded the brass trumpet and gave her the pile of big-band records, as heavy as dinner plates in their fragile paper sleeves.
